Should I get a guinea pig or a hamster?

I have never owned a small mammal before but i’ve had birds, dogs, betas, hermit crabs, and cats.( the birds are the only ones currently at my house)My favorite choices are guinea pigs and hamsters. My friend had hamsters and she said hers were really sweet and never bit her. also their cages seem easier to clean and they just seem all around easier to care for. But guinea pigs are really cute and i heard they make lots of cute little sounds, but I only have about an hour and a half a day to spend with it so it might get lonely. i was thinking i would get a hamster and if i think i can handle a hamster i will get a guinea pig(my mom’s okay with either)
I’m 13 years old if that makes a differance

I suggest a rat. Yeah, I thought they were icky or gross at first too, but after I got over that, I saw them for the clever little things they were.
My guinea pig used to keep me up all night, squeaking and running around the cage, and the hamster I own now does little more than sleep, eat, and run on her wheel.
The rats are smart enough to come when I call, smart enough to follow me around the room, play with my hand, etc. The hamster just sits stupidly for a couple minutes before running for cover.
Just make sure they’re well entertained.

hiya, ive got 4 hamsters and 3 guinea pigs iv had them 4 seven years now, and i think guinea pigs of gorgeous, problem is they do stink and you need some time to be able to
brush their hair
feed them
check they body for bumps and lumps
etc
hamsters r nice pets who need some attention to tame them.
personally i luv them all , but i think u wud be betta with a hamster, cuz i spend a long time with guinea pigs but if u wanna guinea pig u can get 1
they r both great pets

I would suggest the hamster. They are a good beginner and do not require a lot of time. I had 6 Teddy Bear Hamsters growing up as a kid and I never had a problem with them. Just make sure to clean their cage at least once or twice a week. Good luck.

i would say go for the hamster.
both are great animals but i have found that guinea pigs do need more space and time, as they are socoial and should be kept in pairs.
Syrian Hamsters are the bigger hamsters and must be kept alown.

If you don’t have time then a hamster. Guinea pigs make cute noises yes but they are very social and would like someone to make cute noises with…
Rats I hear were a suggestion but again they do best with a friend. It is true they will come when called but proper rat care can be more expensive than hamster care.

i had a guinea pig, he died march 10
i loved him so much , guinea pigs are so loving and sweet , mine died on cancer, i’ve never been so upset in my life, we had two one was mine (the one that died) and the other one is my sisters. Well my ssters guinea pig is VERY lonely now mine has gone. so if you are going to get guinea pigs and not spend much time with them you need two. probz 2 boys becuase girls tend to argue. my ginea pigs loved eachother (brothers) nd now my sisters is so lonely and upset. i would suggest a hamster, they run around and stuff and dont really get lonely but guinea pigs do. if u can get two guinea pigs i would DEFINETLEY recoment them x

i have had better luck with Guinea pigs. they are super cool, rarely bite, and can be trained to do tons of neat tricks.
they can also be litter trained.making their cages easier to clean.
they are not nocturnal,so they would sleep in the night just like you, and don’t jump,or chew as much as a hamster.
both require the same type of bedding,,but a Guinea pig needs a wire cage. they don’t do good in an aquarium.bad air flow…
and if you play w him/her every day they will love the heck outa ya.how much time isnt as important as what you do with that time. mine learned what the sound of the food bag ment and would “talk” up a storm when he heard it. his fav treat was apple,so he would do all kinds of tricks to get some. we would hide a piece under a little cup,and he would sniff it out. i even made him a little maze!! so cool.
also, a Guinea pig is less likely to run a way when you have him out of his cage, and much easier to find if he did get away from you. they make super big “hamster” balls you can put you r piggy in,to run around the house safely(no stairs of coarse).
prob a good idea to observe both at the pet store,or where ever ya are gonna get one and see witch one just calls to you.( i would not recommend a long haired guniea pig…the smooth coat,or the one with all the callics are great!) you can even give them a bath like a puppy or kitty.!!
best of luck.!

I have currently owned a hamster for only 2 months, my friend has a guinea pig but hamsters are much more lovable and cute. Guinea pigs grow bigger than hamsters which makes them easier to find when lost, but hamsters are less expensive and SO CUTE!!!!!!!!

Definitely get a guinea pig. I’ve owned both guinea pigs and hamsters and I’ve found that all of my hamsters have bitten, been noisy on their wheels all night long, and you can’t really hold them because they’re fast little creatures and bite most of the time. I have had guinea pigs also and let me tell you, guinea pigs are more fun than hamsters. Even though they require more work, it is so worth it. They are so cute, not nocturnal, don’t have wheels that will keep you awake all night, are not fast moving animals so you can hold them. People will say “Oh, their squeaking is annoying” but really, they don’t squeak that much. Only when they want something and they “popcorn” when they’re happy and it’s so cute to watch!
But you also may want to consider a hamster because guinea pigs are social animals and require at least one cage mate to be healthy and happy. Guinea pigs also need big cages, check this site out for information on cages. Store bought cages are too small for even one guinea pig.
Here is a site that will help you a lot on guinea pig care:
Please carefully look at both sites because buying guinea pig(s).
Good Luck

A hamster. You should never have just 1 guinea pig — guinea pigs are herd animals and they need to have at least one companion, either one of the same *** or one of the opposite *** that is either spayed or neutered. You can have more than two guinea pigs together, though. Guinea pigs are a lot of work. Hamsters are much easier to care for. I’ve had hamsters and guinea pigs, and I can tell you, hands down, hamsters are much easier to care for. Guinea pigs grow big, and they need a LOT of space. Not like the “large” or “extra large” guinea pig/rabbit cages that you see advertised at pet stores, those cages are maybe suitable for a hamster or two but they are definitely not suitable for guinea pigs.
