  7. Squashie16 Says:

You should always be careful trying to take things out of a dogs mouth. Sometimes they can overreact. Just be a bit more careful next time. I’m sure that he wasn’t too mad.

  14. Miss kitty Says:

You should never snatch anything out of a dogs mouth. You were acting aggressive. He was just protecting what was his.

How old are you? It doesnt sound like you are old enough to have the responsibility of training a German Shepard.

  20. IspeakToRocks Says:

um i agree with michael..bite back.
but i do hope you get better soon..i thought you might be wondering about how to heal your wound, not concerned about why he bit you..i think its more important to heal at this stage.

  21. crazygirllvsn8 Says:

If some one took something from you that you really wanted, or needed and then hit you when you wanted it back, would you defend yourself?

  22. Elana Says:

A pig ear? You were playing with meat in front of a dog’s
    mouth?

You’re lucky you still have your hand.

Do not play with food or anything that can be constrewed by the
dog as food in front of the dog lest you become food too.

Dogs are pretty good about most things, but that is one you
just don’t tamper with unless you’ve worked up to it (that is,
you’ve done the trick with non-edible things and the dog has
    it down cold).

    Why play with Fido’s mind?

  23. westsida Says:

I don’t know too much about training dogs, but I do have a small one, and I would ask a professional trainer, because you never know if he will do this again. It would be awful if he did this to another person. Take care of this problem right away so he doesn’t bite someone else (or you) for real.

  24. sweety Says:

be quick and take the injections

keep ur dog out from your home

  25. Ya-sai Says:

Dogs are not entertainers to do tricks for your pleasure. Treat an animal with respect and it will treat you with respect. The dog should have taken a few mouthful out of your backside, that will show you to have more respect for animals.

  26. Blossom_Kitty Says:

I wouldn’t worry too much, basically he was letting you know he didn’t appreciate your taking his pig ear away. I have a german shepard also, female. She has a tendancy to snip if you try to take her bone, treat or any chew toy away from her.

  27. jhonny rebel Says:

notin wrong when your dog bite you me and my dog avtullay wresle maybee just thout your were playing rough or somin

  28. classical123 Says:

    Dear Honney,

Most likely, he didn’t view the pigs ear as just another toy, but as a piece of food. If it had been something non-food, he might have been playful. You should pay attention to the growls and not use food items for tricks unless you plan on giving them to him. His nip on your hand was a warning that he wasn’t happy with you, but he didn’t want to hurt or main you permanently.

Dogs, just like humans, have a limit, and I think you probably stepped over it.

I suggest getting a book on dog training or consulting a professional trainer.

    -j.

  29. superrelax Says:

dogs do that, he wasn’t deliberately trying to hurt you, you were taunting him with something he wanted. i’m not saying he should have bit you, but most of the time when dogs play with their owners they aren’t trying to hurt them, they often don’t realize that they are hurting you. when he bites hard, even playing, just make sure you let him know (hit him on the **** like you did, but not too hard) that he can’t do that.

  30. hippiechick Says:

you need to regularly take away things he is interested in (toys, food etc.) to show him YOU are alpha. i have a pit bull and i can open her mouth and take food out of it if i want to….

just a suggestion til your baby learns who’s boss.

  31. "O" Wise One Says:

Your dog is fine…. he just got a little rough with mama. He was playing and said that pig ear was his… it was his toy.

I hope that mama is feeling better.

    Have a nice day.

  32. effin' h!lar!ous Says:

    bite him back

  33. pinky Says:

Thats a hard question. I think it is your fault mainly just because a dog cannot be held responsible for it actions, thay have no concience. Now I do believe that dogs can be trained right. BUt let see the problem here. German Shepard + Pig Ear= dont put your hand near the ear or his mouth. especially if the dog is a male. They are more aggresive and territorial with their food. You might wanna go see a dr.

  34. sbravosystems Says:

Dont hit your dog. And try not to tease them with food. A chihuahua (spelling?) will get mad if your hand even goes NEAR their food bowl. Or if they think you will try to snatch their treat. I would guess that your dogs brain doesnt get that aggressive signal often, but Dogs brains are full of random patterns. Its like a laser light show in there, nothing is structured. Its like Thought Pattern Deficit Disorder. Keep your hands clear of the Jaw area and play like you always have! thats my advice.

  35. Tones Says:

Your dog got overstimulated. I think your dog loves you too, but he thinks he is the leader and that you should obey him. So, at the moment it is an issue of rank. Are you superior to the dog or is the dog superior to you.

If the dog does this again, you’ll have to smack it in the jaw to the point where it realizes it has been defeated by you and then, it will be nice to you again and not bite you because it knows you are the stronger “or alpha dog.”

You see, dogs are pack animals. They also believe in a ranking system which they do not step over. Some dogs are more prone to trying to be the “alpha dog” or leader of a pack.

In a family of humans, the dog has to be treated as if they are the most inferior ranked in the “regiment.”

That’s just how dogs think. They are very militaristic.

  36. georgia Says:

watch the show “the dog whisperer” on the animal planet channel. you need to learn how to establish dominance over your dog, and when it’s good to pet him and when its not.
    good luck!

  37. MELISSA B Says:

Didn’t anyone ever tell not to take food away from a dog? They don’t really like that… as you know found out. I’m sure he really didn’t like smack on the **** either. If he wanted to really hurt you he would have, so if you are worried that your dog has turned vicious, don’t. It just sounds like he needs some obedience training so he learns that you are the alpha dog and not him.

  38. Misty Says:

I watched this show on animal planet called The Dog Whisperer and the guy says you have to teach him who is boss or else the behavior will continue. He uses a “choke chain” to control the animals he is working with.

  39. native Says:

it is your fault because you did not set a boundry, you need to let him know you are in charge. i do this when they are puppies, when they do something i don’t want them doing i growl at them if that don’t work i show my teeth and snap at them. this is the langauge they know and they respond very well to it, it works better than hitting.

  40. carbonbiased Says:

Well for one, never get close to an animal that is guarding food. That’s just a no-no. He gave you fair warning, so trying to get the ear was actually your own fault. You will have to reprimand him for biting you though, but not now as it’s too late and he won’t know what you are reprimanding him for. Next time he bites or snaps, make sure he knows that you are the boss and that his behavior isn’t cool. Oh, and never, never try to get near to an animal while it’s eating unless you really understand him/her. That’s just dumb. And by the way, at this moment, I don’t think your pet really respects you as its owner. I think he views you as another dog.

  41. mmosafir Says:

You need to know him more!!!……….

  42. Cornsilk P Says:

That does not sound good. He thinks he is in charge and is obviously very territorial over this food, toys etc.

You need to seek professional help from a trainer. It will only get worse if you do not do something quickly.

  43. MeatLock Says:

if dog bites you, he will never stop doing it. in worse case he can bite anyone, so he’s present danger for anyone around including yourself. the only solution is to give him away or put him to the sleep. if you do have kids around you, the possibility is that he will bite them as well… so be care full…

  44. sharies12 Says:

Don’t play with your GSD with food. The best thing to use are dog toys something you can throw they will fetch it, bring back in their mouth and love for you to tug on it to get it and toss it again.

The pig ears were tasty to him and he did what he had to do to get them back.

  45. coffee4meplz Says:

Ouch!! NEVER NEVER let him get away with that! He is your dog, not your equal. It;s too late to do anything now. If you try to disipine him he wont know what’s going on. How to disapline is up to you. I stick my finger in my dogs face and yell NO! bad dog! and that usually does the trick for him..but I also dont put him in a situaion where he might snap, like you did.. Best to ask a vet? (he may be your pet, but he is an animal first)

  46. Krystle V Says:

Well he was givena treat and you were trying to take it away from him which is not a good thing to try, plus you hit him. I’d say thats an expected response for a dog and he warned you with a growl. After a dog has a a bone or rawhide it’s best to just let them be and not try to take it away, your response to him taking it was probably what caused the bite. Him stealing the bone may have been him palying around or possibly the heat. It was probably just a one time event. In the future take a growl as a warning, you cna respond to a growl in a verbal way like yelling hey in an angry tone but don’t do anything physical after a growl. I hope your hand feels better soon.

  47. Ashes Says:

I have a german shepard too. The thing with these dogs is that if the owner does not take complete leadership the dog will end up being domminat over the owner. You need to work with him to show him that you are in charge regardless of the circumstance. When he starts to growl at you take your thumb and index finger and quickly push them to his neck (like how a dog might bite). Dont show any weakness to him just be firm and dont let him get away with anything you dont want him doing because it will just make him take advantage of you and not take you seriously.

  48. Pericles L Says:

You have to get this dog to Obedience Training immediately. You didn’t say, but I bet he is not neutered. He is trying to dominate you to tell you who is the boss. Your should have been established when he was a puppy. I am not sure what his age is, but you cannot let him get away with things like this. He will become dangerous. Find a good trainer and at least ask for advice. If you do nothing, you will regret it.

  49. cookiesmom Says:

ever remember testing authority?…this was probably him doing the same thing….thats why he let go so quickly…he knew it was wrong….if hes not usually aggressive i wouldnt worry about it and chalk it up to him seeing how far he can push you….he needs to be punished though….i would have put him on a time out (yes you can do this with dogs and only for short periods of time like 5-10 min)…..however if you didnt punish him immediately you cannot go back and do it now…he wont know what its for

  50. JORPEE Says:

Pig ear is food and the dog treat food in his mouth as his property and element essential to his nutritional survival. Do not take out food when its inside the dog’s mouth or it is within his property zone.

Get a wood branch or tennis ball or old socks and play throw/retrieve with objects like this. NOT PIG EAR !!!
